- In this exercise, the student becomes acquainted with some basic data used later on in the course.
Because both organization levels and company offices are delivered as a part of the basic setup of an HR training company,
this exercise is only meant to give the participant the possibility to find and view existing data.
- The same organization levels are used in all HR companies; take this into consideration if the participants create new Organization Levels during the course, or if the data looks inconsistent.
- Because the free fields and property codes must be unique, the teacher
must ensure that participants do not choose the same properties.
It is recommended that each employee is assigned one unique property/free field before the exercise starts.
- Before it is possible to complete this exercise, you have to make sure that the cost center 410 exists in
Code Parts
Values/Cost Center.
- Students should use the Graphical Organization Structure window—not the
Organization Units window—for the
following reasons:
- The structure gives a graphical presentation of the organization codes, which makes it easier for the participants to understand the hierarchical differences between the organization codes they create.
- More importantly, the last step, in which an organization code is moved to a new
node in the structure, cannot be performed in the Organization Units window.
- Encourage your students to follow the naming standards outlined in the exercise. This is especially important when creating a new organization
code, which must be unique in order to save it to the database.
- As teacher, consider creating a PowerPoint organizational chart to help students visualize the company they are working in, and also, understand where their own parts of the organization fits in.
- The organization code is based on a sample production department for which the student's User is the assigned supervisor.
Production department 1-16 are available, the organization code will be Prod-11 for department 1, Prod-111 for department 11 in step 3 and Prod-12 for department 1, Prod-112 for department 11 in step 5.
- Step 4 tips the participant to right click and select Refresh Node because it isn’t unusual that new organization codes aren’t visible in the tree-structure. This has to be done in the left part of the window because the command is disabled anywhere else.
- Step 6 contains the drag and drop exercise. Some students encounter difficulties dragging the organization code to its new parent. Instruct students to click and hold the mouse button, and then slowly drag the organization code to its new position in the structure.
The exercise could also be disturbed by changes made to the organization levels mentioned above.
- When students create a position structure, the problems with the naming standard and the need to use Refresh Node as mentioned above (Maintain Organization Structure) often occurs. The same solutions as above are applicable here.
- Because creating a new position access definition is a complex process, students may require some additional in-class instruction. Discussing the graph in the
Access Results Graphics tab may help students better understand the effects of changing the parameters in the
Access Definition tab.
