Administering Work Hour Rules for Job and Wage Hours—Exercises

Basic Data Setup

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to set up the basic data required for running this functionality. To enter this data, follow the instructions in the Administering Wage Codes Job and Wage Hours and Administering Day Schedules for Job and Wage Hours exercises. If you have completed those exercises, the data you need should already be in the database, and you can proceed directly to the main exercises.

Main Exercises

Purpose: The purpose of these exercises is to show how to define different types of rules—such as flex rule, comp rule, and other balances—and how they affect the handling of time results.

Creating a Flex Rule 

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to create a flex rule.

  1. Open the Work Hour Rules window and click the Flex tab. 
  2. Create a new record (i.e., a new flex rule).
  3. Enter one or more wage codes for plus and minus (e.g., Flex balance) using the List of Values.
  4. Create a credit wage code of the absence type for flex withdrawal in the Wage Codes window. Add the wage code to the flex rule.
  5. Set the balance limits.
  6. Click the Rule Type tab. Create a rule type and enter your flex rule.
  7. Open the Employee Schedules and Rules window and assign the new rule type to your employees.
  8. Open the Time Registration window and try to register flex time for one employee.
  9. Open the Current Balances Summary window and check the flex balance.

Creating a Comp Rule

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to create a compensatory rule.

  1. Open the Work Hour Rules window and click the Compensatory tab. 
  2. Create a new record (i.e., a new comp rule).
  3. Enter one or more wage codes for plus and minus (Comp Balance type) using the List of Values.
  4. Create a credit wage code of the absence type for comp withdrawal in the Wage Codes window. Add the wage code to the compensatory rule.
  5. Set the balance limits.
  6. Add your compensatory rule to your rule type.
  7. For one employee, try to register compensatory time in Time Registration. Go to Current Balances Summary and check the comp balance.

Note:  In Time Registration, use one of the overtime comp wage codes you created in the Administering Wage Codes for Job and Wage Hours exercise Creating a new Wage Code section. 

Creating a Switch Rule

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to create a switch rule.

  1. Open the Work Hour Rules window and click the Switch tab. 
  2. Create a new record (i.e., a new switch rule).
  3. Enter one or more wage codes for plus and minus (Switch Balance type) using the List of Values.
  4. Create a credit wage code of the absence type for switch withdrawal in the Wage Codes window. Add the wage code to the switch rule.
  5. Set the balance limits.
  6. Add your switch rule to your rule type.
  7. For one employee, try to register switch time in Time Registration. Go to Current Balances Summary and check the switch balance.

Creating Other Balances

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to show you how to create an 'Other Balances' rule for summarizing overtime cash for clerks.

  1. Open the Work Hour Rules window.
  2. Click the Other Balances tab, and create a new 'Other Balances' rule.
  3. Enter the overtime cash wage codes in the Wage Code column. 
  4. Set the minimum and maximum alert values.
  5. Set the validity.
  6. Add your 'Other Balances' rule to your rule type.
  7. For one employee, try to register time on the one of the wage codes that you used to update this balance in Time Registration . Open the Current Balances Summary window and check the new Other Balance.
