Create Functional Object Structure

Explanation

This activity is used to create a functional object structure. This can be done either by adding a functional parent to an object or defining a functional child for an object. A functional structure arranges design objects in terms of logical placement, such as facility, plants, area, system, and sub-system, which lie atop real design objects such as pumps, motors and tanks. Most paper, energy, and chemical process plants have some kind of functional plant structure, often with a built-in equipment numbering system identifying each individual item within the facility. Upon the required status changes, a completed functional object structure can directly be transferred and made available for operations and maintenance.

Prerequisites

Class relations using the functional connection type must be configured to enable functional structures to be created.

Procedure

Use the following procedure to create a functional structure by adding a functional parent object:

  1. Open the Design Object, Design Objects or Linear Assets window.
  2. Search for the design object that will lie at the bottom of the functional structure that you wish to create.
  3. In the Functional Parent field, enter the ID of the functional parent object or use the List of Values to select a suitable design object.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Search for the functional parent defined in step 3 on the Design Object window, and define its functional parent to add one more level to the structure.

Use the following procedure to create a functional structure by adding a functional child via drag and drop: 

  1. On the Business Object Explorer, navigate to and highlight a design object to be the functional child object.
  2. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the design object through the navigator structure, opening nodes as required to locate the functional parent object. 
  3. Place the mouse pointer (with connected object) over the object's Functional Parts folder.
  4. Drop the design object onto the folder by releasing the mouse button. 

A successful drag and drop occurs when the receiving object accepts the functional child object. An invalid drag and drop operation, e.g., dropping the design object into the wrong folder, results in an error message. Drag and drop connects and saves simultaneously.
